PARADISE LAKE ASSOCIATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND GOALS
In 2010, so far have placed 16,000 weevils in Paradise Lake, contracted with Lake Superior State University for a complete water quality study of Paradise Lake, assisted UM Biological Station with their search for pond mussels in the lake, and sponsored an Emmet County Sherrif's Boating Safety Class attended by 19 adults and youth.
ON-GOING PROJECTS:
Monitor & record water quality standards weekly and publish analysis yearly
Submit sediment samples for analysis for contaminants
Monitor, detect, and initiate corrective action as regards to water pollution and environmental degradation of the watershed
Research, organize, and finance corrective action to combat non-indigenous, invasive water species such as Eurasian Water Milfoil and Zebra mussels
Alerted and fought for area residents as to proposed condominium development posing a possible threat to watershed. Partnering with Little Traverse Conservancy in encouraging lake area residents to fund the purchase of the proposed development site (50 acres and 3800 feet of shoreline) now forever dedicated for use as a nature preserve.
Closely monitor proposed or attempted industrial or residential development within the watershed and notify MI. Dept. of Environment Quality for appropriate action
Participate in river care with Conservation Resource Alliance to devise protection plan for Carp Lake River
Provided financial assistance for reconstruction of timber bridge within area watershed to prevent erosion and degradation of watershed
Initiated, financed and monitored repair of outflow dam and financed erosion control on lake and river shorelines in cooperation with BALSM INC.
Working with University of MI. Biological Station to format and create a watershed management plan
Participate with MI. Dept of Natural Resources in assessing fish habitat, population, and planting of fish stock
Establish and administer college scholarship fund to provide financial assistance to area youth interested in pursuing studies in the natural sciences
Organize and conduct summer festival to celebrate and promote public interest and awareness in maintaining lake water quality through biological control of invasive species
Provide monthly forum for area resident to voice concerns and question regarding environment issues within the watershed area
Educate residents on environmental issues, trends, and solutions through the presentation of appropriate speakers having expertise in the given area
Publish and distribute quarterly newsletter informing members of activities and agenda concerning lake issues
Assemble and distribute Christmas food baskets as well collect and distribute emergency financial assistance to area residents
Construct and maintain hiking trails to connect township park with Little Traverse Conservancy nature preserve
Dedication to the flag pole, bear, and foliage at the community triangle
Worked with Carp Lake Twp to construct the pavilion and tennis courts at the park
Sponsor annual fund raising bass fishing and ice fishing tournaments
Partner with Little Traverse Band of Ottawa and Michigan Department of Natural Resources to finance a boat washing station at the lake access site on Paradise Trail
